How to Prepare Your Home for an Electric Vehicle

2023 Cadillac Lyriq

If you’ve been considering switching to an electric vehicle, you may be wondering how do you charge your electric vehicle, and how do you prepare your home for an electric car. If there are not a lot of public charging stations in your area, you can easily transform your home into a charging station with the help of Atlantic Cadillac. We’ll explore how to prepare your home for an electric vehicle so that you can take home the eco-friendly car of your dreams to Farmingdale.

Selecting Your Charger

The first step on how to prepare your home for an electric vehicle is to find which charger you will be using. Typically, you will have two to select from, a level 1 charger, and a level 2 charger. Most plug-in electric vehicles come with a level 1 charger, delivering standard household current levels of 110 to 120 volts. This is slower to charge than a level 2 but isn’t an issue if time isn’t a demanding factor.

If you need your vehicle to charge more rapidly, then a level 2 charger will allow you to rapidly charge your vehicle as if using a public charging station. However, it does require the installation of a complete charging station in your home, and not just using a standard outlet.

Creating Your Charging Station

To create a charging station in your own Smithtown garage, you will need to follow the steps below:

  • Find the power panel: The power panel is the most crucial component of your charging system. A majority of electronically updated homes have a 100-amp power panel. You can find the voltage of your power panel by checking what is printed on the main circuit breaker.
  • Perform an energy audit: You will need to find out whether adding a 240-volt level 2 charger will overload the electrical consumption capability of your home. If you are not sure how to perform this audit, there are resources available online from the Department of Energy. You do not want to exceed 80 percent of your energy panel’s capacity.
  • Install the charging station: Because this is a complex task that could be dangerous, it is best to leave the installation to a professional.
  • Purchase the correct electric vehicle charger: Make sure that the charger you choose fits within the supply capacity of your main power panel.
